ELA 9 Wix Page Set-Up

 

Unit Overview: In this unit we learned how to characterize characters in stories and we analyzed what their actions and speech are to understand their personalities. We also learned about character foils and how some characters can be opposites to other characters, after learning this we had to write an essay about the stories Hamadi and I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings and how some of the characters are remarkable and how they differ.

Enduring Understanding:

 

What makes a character memorable? Characters become memorable after they do something that is bold and or if they have surprising personalities, also if they are able to do something under really high circumstances. Hamadi in the story Hamadi is a very remarkable character because he helped Tracy when she started crying because Eddie was ignoring her. Hamadi is a remarkable character because he was able to help Tracy think of Eddie in a different way. Mrs. Flowers in the story in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is also a very remarkable character because she was able to inspire and teach Marguerite about literature, this makes her remarkable because she was able to move Marguerite and get her to speak after she had been raped and has not spoken in year.

Technical— In order to write an effective literary criticism essay you need to you need to have an introduction that allows the reader to know a bit about your essay and at the same time state your opinion on what you are criticizing. The essay needs to have the right grammar that fits the context of your essay. The tone of the essay needs to be in a formal tone or else it will not be presented to the reader properly. Evidence is essential to writing a literary criticism essay because you need to be able to prove your points and also finds some counter arguments. The conclusion of the essay needs to restate all of the statements that are in the essay and emphasize them again. This will cause the reader to think about the the statements you made in the essay and it may change their opinion from when they first starting reading the essay.
