Unit 4: Yearbook Pages
Unit Overview:
In this unit I moved from designing and printing 3D objects to 2D designs. The designs I created are for this year’s yearbook. The software I worked with was Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. This is a professional and very complicated software that is used by real graphic designers. Illustrator is mainly used for creating vectors. In our case we were creating aztec designs to go with the yearbook. InDesign is used for placing in the photos. Learning to use the software was a bit challenging, but I did well. In order to learn the new software I worked on several beginner tutorials. Once I understood how to do the basics, I was given my yearbook tasks. I was tasked with creating templates for the autograph pages and the middle school division pages. I made the first one in Illustrator. When it was finished I had to transfer all the designs into InDesign so that photos may be added. In this unit we had several checkpoints. During these checkpoints we got feedback from our peers and teacher about how to make our designs even better. It can be frustrating to have to go back and revise my work so many times, but in the end it is worth it because I have a better design.
Enduring Understanding:
In this unit, you did some authentic learning, learning that can be applied to the real world. You were tasked with creating either a layout, template, taking photos or photoshopping images, for this year’s yearbook. This book will be viewed and purchased by our Berkeley Community, so how you do on this is very important, and meeting deadlines is crucial. By completing this task you get a taste of what the real world is like.
How can the work, and skills you gained in this unit, be applied to your real life, or your future?
The work I did this quarter is related to real life because I had to learn how to stay on track and to learn how to meet my deadlines with my best possible work. In the real world meeting deadlines is important because of you cannot meet deadlines it can cause things to fail, you can lose your job and or cause your company to not be as successful. I also learned how to manage my time correctly, this is important in the real world because if you cannot manage your time correctly it can cause you to either not be able to make your work the best it can be or it can cause you to not be able to reach your deadline.
Reflection on Progress Towards the Standards:
Strengths:
Standard: Generate, organize, and refine creative ideas.
This was a strength of mine because I was able to think of an aztec design that looked good which had a pretty unique aspect to it.
Standard: Demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems and operations.
I understood how the programs work but I later realized there was a much faster, efficient way to do what I was doing.
